Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Illustrative Mathematics – Washington D.C area

Illustrative Mathematics (IM) is a non-profit organization founded in 2011 by Bill McCallum, one of the lead writers of the common core state standards in mathematics. IM is committed to crafting and delivering high quality education resources for teachers and students of mathematics. Reporting to and partnering with the CEO, the CFO will play a critical role in developing and implementing business strategies for the Company. The CFO provides financial thought leadership through robust planning/forecasting and decision support (including analysis of growth options and opportunities). S/he will be responsible for overseeing all fiscal and fiduciary responsibility for the organization in conjunction with the Board of Directors.

Postion Type: Full Time

Location: US-Based - Washington DC Area

Key Responsibilities: Strategy, Planning and Operations

  • As a business partner to the CEO, assess organizational performance against both the annual budget and Company's long-term strategy. Develop tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the CEO and make actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations.
  • Demonstrate executive presence and communication skills (e.g., ability to be effective participant with executive team, Illustrative Mathematics Board of Directors, etc.)
  • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and costs management in alignment with Company's Strategic Plan, especially as the organization considers sponsorships, potential partners and collaborations with external organizations.
  • Drive financial literacy and sound, proactive decision making through the leadership team and help peers identify countermeasures when financial challenges arise.
  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and regulatory requirements. Maintain internal control safeguards and coordinate all audit activities.
  • Manage cash flow and forecasting. Develop a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism that includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs.
  • Optimize the handling of banking relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash positions.

Skills and Qualifications

The CFO will be a seasoned leader with at least 10 years of broad finance experience, ideally beginning in accounting, followed by experience gathering and evaluating financial information and making actionable recommendations to senior leadership.

In addition, the successful candidate will have the following experience and attributes:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in Accounting, finance or other related field, an MBA preferred
  • An effective communicator at all levels in the organization, with strong oral and written skills and a willingness to share information.
  • A collaborative and flexible style, with a strong service mentality.
  • Experience with both non-profit and profit organizations a plus.
  • Creativity, with experience funding activities in ways that both cover costs and generate operating margins
  • A proactive approach, with evidence of having worked as a true business partner to the CEO of an organization.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting a strategic vision into an operational model.
  • A hands-on manager with integrity and a desire to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience in K-12 education a plus.

Executive Assistant

The Executive Assistant will be supporting the CEO, President and Executive Staff in a variety of responsibilities, requiring the individual to have strong organization skills and to be a self-starter as this position will be remote.

Postion Type: Full Time

Location: Remote

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage multiple tasks proactively, including the scheduling and planning, appointments, meetings, and conference calls.
  • Project manage the President key tasks and deliverables.
  • Serving as the virtual “front desk” for emails and phone calls to the generic company inbox and responding or routing them as appropriate.
  • Set-up and coordination of the bi-annual board meetings and quarterly advisory meetings, supporting the travel and expense reimbursement for board members and working with their admins to schedule and coordinate all details regarding the meetings. (venue, food, travel, etc.)
  • Plan and coordinate companywide meetings and “social” activities to support an ongoing engaged remote culture Plan and coordinate weekly leadership meetings with agendas and notes
  • Responsible for the annual all employee retreat including venue, agenda, travel and food Supporting other senior team members with specific projects and activities (including the online store, the website, etc.) May be asked to compose, proofread, organize, and maintain correspondence, reports, and other documents as well as prepare presentations.
  • Assist with the onboarding and offboarding of employees and contractors.
  • Manage the funders database and support ongoing communications with funders Establish strong relationships with admins at partner and funder organizations to expedite important meetings and contacts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • Three to five years of administrative experience at an executive level ( C-suite)
  • Excellent collaboration and team building skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A detail-oriented personality.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment with limited direct supervision.
  • Professional demeanor in all situations and be able to withhold confidential information.
  • Strong computer and database management skills including working knowledge of google applications.

Designer with UX/UI Experience

We are seeking an experienced Instructional Materials UI/UX Designer to join our team that designs and develops high school mathematics courses, products, and resources.

Postion Type: Part-time contract for 18 to 24 month assignment

Location: Remote

Key Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility will be product and UI/UX design that fits within an established branding scheme. You will:

  • Develop a design strategy for our instructional materials that spans both print and digital products.
  • Work with our engineers and content development team to develop user-centric designs and ensure technical feasibility of designs.
  • Apply best-practice UX and UI design skills to create proof-of-concepts, mockups, and prototypes for both print and digital products.
  • Be flexible and adapt quickly and easily to changing requirements and needs as the instructional materials requirements continue to evolve.
  • Develop and maintain a collaborative relationship with all appropriate internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conduct user research to guide product design decisions. (Contextual inquiry, usability testing, competitive analysis, etc.)
  • Define, test, and iterate on the interaction design of new and existing features. (User-flows, detailed product wireframes, prototypes)
  • Ensure all aspects of our product are easy-to-use and delightful.
  • Work with the development team to ensure effective execution of design.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Ability to work collaboratively and creatively in a fast-paced, agile environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and a feeling of pride and ownership over the quality of our learning experience.
  • Experience with instructional design of curriculum materials that include both print and digital., experience in mathematics curriculum design helpful.
  • Aware of current trends, leading science and innovations, and research in learning science, instructional media, UI/UX and learner behavior.
  • Experience applying design strategies informed by learning and behavioral sciences, instructional design, and interaction/web/eLearning design principles.
  • Conceptual knowledge of web/software development.
