CEO, Lisa O’Masta, moves on to head a non-competitive K-12 provider; IM launches a nationwide search for new CEO

Tucson, AZ — Nov. 6, 2019 — Illustrative Mathematics (IM), a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where learners know, use, and enjoy mathematics, has announced that CEO Lisa O’Masta is stepping down on Dec. 1, 2019, and that Dr. William McCallum will step in as interim CEO. After leading IM for more than three years, O’Masta is leaving for a new opportunity to head up a non-competing curriculum provider within the K-12 market. She will retain her position as a member of the IM board of directors.

“Illustrative Mathematics is on an incredible journey to bring thoughtfully created core K-12 math curriculum to educators and students throughout the country,” says O’Masta. “I’ve been so fortunate to have had the opportunity to lead this amazing team and never felt more confident of their ongoing success as they enter the next phase of their mission.”

As president and co-founder of IM, McCallum currently chairs the board of directors, which sets the strategic direction for the organization. Recently retired as an Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at the University of Arizona, McCallum has dedicated his career to helping educators, mathematicians, and policymakers show fidelity to both mathematical coherence and student learning. His work in mathematics education led to his selection as a lead writer for the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics, and his founding of Illustrative Mathematics.

“Lisa has been instrumental in establishing relationships with key IM Certified distribution partners Kendall Hunt, LearnZillion, and McGraw-Hill, and in bringing the IM 6-12 Math curricula to more than 450,000 students nationwide. She led the organization through a very critical time of growth, and we would not be where we are today without her,” said McCallum. “Saying goodbye to a dynamic and ambitious leader like Lisa won’t be easy, but we thank her for her leadership and for leaving IM in a strong position to achieve its long-term vision.”

During the search for a new CEO, McCallum will be supported by a governing committee including Karl Nelson, chief information officer; Trisha Thomas, chief customer officer; Kristin Umland, chief product officer; and Kristen Welch, chief financial officer. During the interim period, co-founder Kristin Umland will assume a temporary board position to help guide the transition.
