Fluency built on understanding

IM Math is designed so conceptual understanding and procedural fluency develop together, each strengthening the other. Students learn why a method works while they learn to use it, and build speed and accuracy through practice that’s built into every unit.

Daily routines build fact fluency. Distributed practice—returning to key skills over time instead of drilling them once—strengthens automaticity while freeing up working memory for harder problems. In middle school, practice sets deliberately revisit problem types from earlier units, so retrieval stays active rather than fading between topics. Students learn the standard algorithms, and they learn why they work, so fluency holds up over time instead of fading after the test.

That’s what coherence looks like in practice: students build understanding and fluency together, with the curriculum reinforcing both over time. The result is stronger, more durable learning.

Built by mathematicians and educators

Illustrative Mathematics began in 2011 at the University of Arizona. Dr. Bill McCallum, a lead writer of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, and Dr. Kristin Umland, a fellow educator and mathematician, set out to design high-quality math tasks and make them freely available to every teacher. Demand grew quickly, and by 2017 that early work had grown into a complete, standards-aligned curriculum.

IM became an independent nonprofit in 2013. Today, more than 3.6 million students across all 50 states learn with IM Certified curricula.
