Multiples of ten

In this unit students

•  count by tens;
•  represent multiples of ten on the number line;
•  count on by ones from any multiple of ten;
•  count on and back by tens from any multiple of ten;
•  compare two-digit numbers;
•  count forward and backward by ones and tens starting from a number that is not a multiple of ten.

In this unit students work with multiples of ten. Here students count forward and backward by tens from any multiple of ten, find ten more or ten less than a given number mentally, and count on by ones from any multiple of ten. They also count forward and backward by ones and tens from numbers that are not multiples of ten. Students can use tools like an empty number line to support this work. Based on the values of tens and ones, students compare numbers using pictures, number lines, and symbols (<, >, =).

I wonder why you don't mention the use of a 100 chart? Using Marilyn Burns' series (Scholastic), Do the Math Addition A module, I have had had good success first using a 100-chart to scaffold for students how to "add to the nearest ten" throughout the number 1-100. An open number number line is then introduced as a short-cut notation tool to what has been shown on the 100 chart which seems as a much more natural progression, helping children understand it as an addition tool rather than simply a measurement tool. I wonder how you can suggest a number line tool so easily without taking into account K-2 developmental stages and critical learning phases they go through in constructing a robust understanding of number (see Kathy Richardson's How Children Develop Number Concepts).
