Independently reviewed. Rated all-green.
IM Math v.360 holds all-green ratings from EdReports across every gateway for every grade band from kindergarten through Algebra 2.
As an independent nonprofit, EdReports evaluates instructional materials for alignment to standards and other indicators of quality, helping educators make informed curriculum decisions.
Measurable results, by design
Districts implementing IM Math with aligned professional learning and support have shown real, measurable gains in math proficiency.
LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
+3–4 months
LA schools using IM Math outperformed similar schools in math growth.
An analysis from Leanlab Education found LAUSD schools using IM Math gained an additional 3–4 months of math learning compared with their peers.
NYC PUBLIC SCHOOLS, DISTRICT 11
+24.8 pts
District 11 saw a 24.8-percentage-point gain in math proficiency.
Math proficiency in grades three through eight rose from 25.8% to 50.6% between 2022 and 2025, nearly doubling the share of students scoring proficient.
What’s in IM Math v.360?
A coherent path, TK through Algebra 2
A full sequence of units for every grade level, where students revisit core ideas in new contexts and at increasing levels of complexity.
Lessons built for discussion
Tasks and instructional routines designed for classroom discussion and collaborative problem-solving.
Support built in, not bolted on
Embedded supports for English learners and students with disabilities, including math language routines and UDL-aligned guidance.
Assessment tied to student thinking
Unit assessments, session checkpoints, and lesson cool downs built into every unit.
See problem-based instruction in real classrooms
These are real IM Math lessons, filmed in real classrooms with real students and teachers, so you can see what problem-based instruction actually looks like at different grade bands.
Kindergarten
A kindergarten class makes sense of a new math idea together through play and discussion.
Grade 5
Grade 5 students work through a problem together, comparing strategies and justifying their thinking.
Algebra 1
An Algebra 1 class makes connections across ideas before the teacher guides a synthesis.
Fluency built on understanding
Procedural fluency builds on a foundation of conceptual understanding, strategic reasoning, and problem solving, according to NCTM’s Principles to Actions. IM Math is designed that way from the start.
Students make sense of a method through carefully chosen problems and representations. They learn the standard algorithms and unpack why they work. Instructional routines give students regular practice explaining their thinking, justifying their reasoning, and questioning strategies. Students learn math by doing math, and that time spent discussing and making connections is what builds fluency over time.
Practice is distributed. K–5 Centers and 6–12 practice problem sets return to key skills across lessons and units, so retrieval stays active and automaticity builds, freeing up working memory for more complex mathematical thinking.
THE TAKEAWAY
In IM Math, conceptual understanding is how procedural fluency gets built, and why it lasts.
Built by mathematicians and educators
Illustrative Mathematics began in 2011 at the University of Arizona. Dr. Bill McCallum, a lead writer of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, and Dr. Kristin Umland, a fellow educator and mathematician, set out to design high-quality math tasks and make them freely available to every teacher. Demand grew quickly, and by 2017 that early work had grown into a complete, standards-aligned curriculum.
IM became an independent nonprofit in 2013. Today, more than 3.6 million students across all 50 states learn with IM Certified curricula.
